John J. Mariane is an Associate at Sullivan & Carter, where his practice focuses on patents, trade secrets, and trademarks as well as software copyrights containing proprietary information. His practice takes a holistic approach to IP, assisting start-ups and established companies alike along the entire IP acquisition and enforcement process.
Mr. Mariane’s practice includes all aspects of intellectual property with a focus on patents. As a licensed patent attorney, he has extensive experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications as well as managing all of clients’ patent needs—including freedom to operate opinions, licensing agreements and assignments, patent maintenance, and enforcement. He also consults clients on leveraging multiple forms of IP protection, when available, to ensure maximum protection of clients’ assets.
Utilizing his background in tech, Mr. Mariane has drafted and prosecuted several software and electrical patents. He understands the needs of tech start-ups and the importance of brand and product protection, as well as the importance of IP as assets and collateral in obtaining financial backing.
Mr. Mariane received his J.D. and a Certificate in International Law from Loyola University Chicago School of Law. Additionally, he was an active member of the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago. Prior to law school, Mr. Mariane earned his History degree with a Physics minor from Loyola University Chicago.
